A FRESH LOOK
FOR A CLASSIC BOOK

Penguin Random House

Illustration, Graphic design, Typography

The Problem
Penguin approached me to reimagine the cover of The Fat Lady Sings by Jacqueline Roy, a groundbreaking novel exploring race, class, and mental health in the UK. As part of Bernardine Evaristo’s Black Britain: Writing Back series, the goal was to give the book a fresh new look that would resonate with modern audiences and sit comfortably alongside titles by Bernardine Evaristo, Brit Bennett, and Jacqueline Woodson.

The Solution
I was commissioned to create an illustration that reflected the emotional nuance and intimacy of the story, using my signature delicate linework, graphic shapes, and a muted colour palette. The result was a quietly powerful cover that mirrored the book’s sensitive exploration of female friendship and mental health, while giving this important novel the contemporary presence it deserves.
